New Delhi: 300 kilometres south of Shanghai is Yiwu, a city of 1.2 million people. Famous as the commodities capital of China, Yiwu is in news after an Indian diplomat was involved in a scuffle with local traders, prompting the Indian Embassy to issue a strongly worded advisory cautioning Indians “not to do business with Yiwu.”

For example, there are suppliers of Christmas decorations, a Yiwu speciality, so most Christmas products are produced in Yiwu, but you will find suppliers as well as in Shenzhen and other areas. However, the Shenzhen supplier may play a dirty trick by not telling you the products are manufactured in Yiwu, or even claim that what they sell is better than those actually made in Yiwu.B. The US is one of Yiwu’s top 3 importing countries and many high-quality products are shipped from China to the US every year. Yiwu also has some budget products targeted at developing countries, but it is simply not true to say that all Yiwu products are of poor quality.

4. What will you find in the Yiwu market?
Many say that one can find practically anything he needs in the Yiwu market. This, however, is not true. Small daily-use products such as toys and Christmas decorations are most common in the market. Shenzhen has a market but only for electronic devices. Guangzhou is a popular center for jewelry, clothing and other related items but the manufacturing hubs are located in different areas within the city, making one-stop sourcing difficult.
